Sapling is thrilled to present limited edition wildflower seed packets designed by Gilbert & George, produced in partnership with contemporary artist Sam Harris.
One side of the design features the words Gilbert & George say Spread your Seed in the artists' handwriting. Using tongue in cheek language characteristic of their engagement with taboo, the slogan also contains a more serious call for us to take responsibility for our ecological surroundings. The flip-side features an artwork titled Greenly (2019) where the artists' eyes and mouths merge into tree leaves. Fashioning themselves as hybrid man-plants invokes the Green Man, a pagan symbol of fertility and countercultural icon that speaks to us today in our age of ecological crisis. Greenly is from a series called The Paradisical Pictures where the artists wander through fantastical natural worlds, sometimes becoming one body with nature as in the present work.
In the spirit of guerilla gardening, scatter your seeds for the love of nature, beauty, and quite simply a good time.
