“Images talk back, they are alive, they activate, they whisper, they look you in the eye, they stare. They slowly unravel. They disappear only to reappear.” Tal Regev, Summer 2023
Sapling is proud to present Sunlit Moon, a solo exhibition by Tal Regev. This new body of oil paintings presses the ecstatic quality of turning points - when mind and body engages with change to exalted effect. The process of healing is one such experience, itself an intangible point in time that is given figurative presence by the distinct transition from ‘before’ to ‘after’. In these new works, Regev approaches the state of healing with increased compositional complexity and chromatic intensity. Feathering oils in multiple layers, the artist works on several paintings at once, allowing each of them to dry, settle, and breathe new images into being. Figures emerge and dissolve in haze-like fields, built up of many, subtle, modulated hues. The resulting compositions are delicate, yet firm and unhesitating, and Regev focuses on the intangible emotions that we carry within us: memories and passing nonverbal thoughts, that flow and touch the edge of our senses. Being in the presence of her paintings is, as such, to be shown the ways in which renewal can take place.
Virginia Woolf captured this release similarly: “I will pick flowers; I will bind flowers in one garland and clasp them and present them—Oh! to whom? There is some check in the flow of my being; a deep stream presses on some obstacle; it jerks; it tugs; some knot in the centre resists. Oh, this is pain, this is anguish! I faint, I fail. Now my body thaws; I am unsealed, I am incandescent. Now the stream pours in a deep tide fertilizing, opening the shut, forcing the tight-folded, flooding free.” — The Waves, 1931
